How Big Are the Netflix UK and US Libraries?

Netflix does not buy one global catalogue. It buys the right to stream each title country by country, so the UK and US libraries are assembled separately and drift apart month by month. That is why a US article can tell you a show is “streaming now” when it is not in your account.

What the Trackers Say (and Why They Clash)

Of the three sources that give both countries, one puts the UK ahead and two put the US ahead. The UK figure alone swings from about 4,230 to 8,893, a gap of more than 4,600 titles. Both cannot be right, which brings us to why.

Why Different Websites Report Different Catalogue Sizes

• Different counting days. As covered in our guide to what’s leaving Netflix UK, roughly 200 titles join and leave each month. Two counts taken weeks apart will differ by hundreds.
• Different ideas of a “title”. Most trackers count a whole series as one title, but a few count seasons or episodes. That single choice can move a total by thousands.
• Entries you cannot watch. Some methods pick up listings that exist in Netflix’s data but never appear for a normal account.

The practical rule: ignore any library-size comparison that does not give the date it was measured, and treat all of them as rough.

Films vs Series: How the Libraries Split

Only two recent sources split their counts into films and series. Neither publishes a matching UK and US pair, so you cannot compare them directly, but they show the rough shape:

Most articles frame Britain as the one missing out. In practice each library has real strengths.

What the UK Tends to Get

• British-made series and films where Netflix holds UK rights. Much of this never reaches America.
• European and Irish titles, which are often licensed for UK and EU territories rather than North America.
• Earlier arrivals for some films. UK pay-TV windows work differently from American ones, so some studio films reach Netflix UK first.

What the US Tends to Get

The US advantage mostly comes down to American network television. Long-running US network series are often tied to British broadcasters or platforms such as Sky, NOW, Prime Video and Disney+. One more point to remember: when an American show is missing from Netflix UK, it is usually not missing from Britain. It is on another British service.

Shows That Are on One Netflix but Not the Other

We have deliberately not printed a long “US-only” or “UK-only” list. Those lists go out of date within weeks, and many old ones were written by VPN companies and never rechecked. Instead, test the title you actually want using the steps in the “How to Check” section below. Why Netflix Has Different Libraries in Each Country

Netflix explains it itself. A title can be in one country and not another for three reasons:

1. Regional popularity. Netflix stocks what it expects each region to watch. Its own wording says what is popular in the US may not be in the UK, even though both speak English.
2. Multiple rights owners. Different studios or distributors may hold rights to the same title in different territories, and Netflix may have secured one region years before another.
3. The rights are not available. Nobody can licence a title that nobody is selling in that region, or that a rival has taken exclusively.

For Netflix Originals there are two more causes. Some titles existed before Netflix took exclusive rights, so rights stay elsewhere. In other cases another company already holds that specific region. Competition matters too. The US has several big rival services, so studios often keep their best titles for their own platforms. Licences also run for fixed periods. When one ends, a title can move to another service or come back later, which is why you can see how long films stay on Netflix vary so widely.

Is Netflix Cheaper in the UK or the US?

On the face of it, yes. At every tier the UK number is lower. But pounds and dollars are not directly comparable without an exchange rate and a date, and the rate moves, so we have not converted them. The honest comparison is how much each plan costs for the person paying in their own currency. The ad-supported plan is the cheapest way in on both sides, and it is the one that rose most in percentage terms in the UK. Which Netflix Library Is Better Value?

Judge by what you watch, not by the total number of titles.

• Netflix UK suits you if you like British drama, comedy and documentaries, or European and Irish series, or you simply want the cheaper entry price.
• The US catalogue would suit you if you mainly follow American network series and want the largest dated film-and-series count shown by recent trackers.
• If you are in the UK, the US library is not really an option. You use the country your account is registered in, and the better move for a missing show is to find it on another British service.

Can You Watch US Netflix in the UK?

Not through your normal account. Netflix ties each account to the country it was set up in, and that country cannot be changed unless you move.

Travelling Abroad

You can use Netflix as usual on your phone, tablet or laptop when you travel, or sign in on a hotel or rental TV. What you see depends on the country you are in, and some items, such as My List and Continue Watching, may not appear abroad. What About VPNs?

Search for this topic and most of the first page is written by VPN companies, so be wary. Netflix’s own help page says a VPN can make your device look as if it is somewhere else, and that you may then only see titles licensed worldwide, such as Squid Game or Stranger Things. Using one to reach another country’s catalogue also breaches Netflix’s terms of use, and Netflix works to block it. Using a VPN is legal in the UK, but it is not a dependable way to get a different library, and we do not recommend it.

How to Check If a Title Is on Netflix UK

1. Search inside Netflix first. If the title page appears but has nothing to play, it is genuinely absent in the UK rather than hidden.
2. Use a UK availability search. JustWatch lets you filter by United Kingdom and shows every platform carrying a title, including rental options.
3. Check the other UK services. Sky and NOW hold a lot of American network and HBO content. Prime Video and Disney+ hold much of the rest.
4. Consider a one-off rental. If nothing carries it on subscription, renting is usually a couple of pounds.

Constantly. Around 200 titles arrive and leave each month in each direction, and removals tend to cluster at month end. Before you subscribe for one particular title, search for it on Netflix and on JustWatch first, because it is probably on a British service already.
