Sky Sports holds the live rights across the UK and Ireland, and holds them for a long time yet, with the deal running to 2034. Every session goes out live on Sky Sports F1: practice, qualifying, sprints and the race itself.
Channel 4 carries the free-to-air side. Highlights of every race, usually a ninety-minute edit shown the same evening or on the following Sunday, plus highlights of qualifying and sprint sessions.
And one race a year goes out live and free.
The British Grand Prix is free and live
Silverstone is written into the arrangement. Channel 4 shows the British Grand Prix live, in full, at no cost, every year.
It is the only Grand Prix on British free-to-air television live, and it is worth putting in the calendar if you are not paying for Sky. There is no catch and no sign-up beyond having Channel 4, which everyone does.
The thing every other guide leaves out
The free-to-air arrangement is not permanent. When Sky and Channel 4 extended their partnership, the extension ran through to the end of the 2026 season.
So the highlights and the free British Grand Prix are secure for this season. Beyond that, it depends on whether the two sides renew, and nothing has been settled publicly.
Most guides on this subject describe the Channel 4 coverage as though it were a fixture of British life. It is a contract with an end date, and if you are reading this in a later season, check whether it was extended before assuming the free coverage is still there.
