Prime Video is the streaming service most British households have without ever having chosen it. It arrives attached to Amazon delivery, sits on the television alongside the ones people did pick, and gets opened mainly when somebody remembers a specific show is on it.
It is also the most confusing of the major services, for one reason that has nothing to do with the programmes.
The thing that confuses everyone
Three different things live inside the same app, and they are not all included with Prime.
| What it is | What it costs |
|---|---|
| Included with Prime | Nothing extra. This is the actual Prime Video library |
| Prime Video Channels | A separate subscription, billed through Amazon |
| Rent or buy | A one-off payment per title |
All three appear together in search results. You find a film, settle in, press play, and discover it belongs to a channel you do not subscribe to.
The fix is a habit rather than a setting: look for the “included with Prime” label before you commit to anything. If it is not there, you are being offered something extra.
What you actually get with Prime
The included library is substantial, and it is built around Amazon’s own productions.
Its best-known originals include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Boys, Reacher, The Wheel of Time, Citadel, Jack Ryan and The Devil’s Hour. On the British side, Clarkson’s Farm, The Grand Tour and The Rig have done a great deal of the heavy lifting, and Clarkson’s Farm in particular is the kind of domestic hit that does not travel from the American catalogue.
We go through the pick of them in our guides to the best films on Prime Video UK and the best series on Prime Video UK.
Alongside the originals sits a rotating selection of licensed films and series, which behaves much like any other service: titles arrive, titles leave, and the licences underneath are short. The mechanics are the same ones we set out in our guide to why titles move between UK services.
The sport
Worth knowing, because it is easy to miss. Prime Video carries selected live UEFA Champions League matches as part of the membership.
What it no longer carries is Premier League football. Prime Video held a package of matches for several seasons and that arrangement has ended, which catches out anyone following an older guide. Our guide to watching the Premier League in the UK covers who holds those rights now.
Advertising
Prime Video carries advertising on Amazon Originals and on licensed content included with a Prime membership. The breaks run before programmes and during them, though this varies by title, with some carrying only a break at the start.
An ad-free option is available for an additional fee, though it does not cover live sport, as our guide to removing ads on Prime Video UK explains. Whether that is worth paying depends entirely on how much you actually watch, and our comparison of free versus paid streaming works through that kind of calculation.
Prime Video Channels, properly explained
This is the part worth understanding rather than avoiding, because used deliberately it is genuinely useful.
Channels let you subscribe to other services from inside Prime Video, without installing their apps or creating separate accounts. The billing runs through Amazon and you can cancel at any time.
Among those available in the UK are discovery+ and discovery+ Premium, which carries TNT Sports, Paramount+, hayu for reality television, and STARZPLAY. BFI Player also runs as a channel here, which is the easiest route to classic and world cinema without another app, as our guide to where to watch classic films in the UK explains.
Our full list of Prime Video Channels in the UK goes through every one with its price and trial, and which eight are worth knowing.
The advantage is practical. One bill, one app, one place to cancel. The disadvantage is the confusion above, and the fact that it is very easy to accumulate channels you have forgotten about.
Worth doing once a year: open your Amazon account, find the channel subscriptions, and look at what is still running. People routinely find one they stopped watching months ago.
Where Prime Video is strong
- You already pay for Prime. The video service costs you nothing additional, which changes the maths entirely.
- British factual and motoring. Clarkson’s Farm and The Grand Tour have no equivalent elsewhere.
- Rental depth. If you want one specific film, Prime Video’s rental catalogue is among the largest in Britain.
- Channels as a hub. Running several services through one bill is genuinely tidier than six apps.
Where it disappoints
- The interface. Mixing included, subscription and rental content in one view is the most common complaint, and it is a deliberate commercial choice rather than an oversight.
- Catalogue consistency. Outside its originals, the included library turns over noticeably.
- Depth in any one category. Like Netflix, it is broad rather than deep, so specialists outgrow it.
Getting more out of it
- Filter to what is included. Prime Video lets you browse only the content covered by your membership. Doing that once removes most of the frustration.
- Check your channels annually. The easiest money most households recover.
- Use it for rentals. Even if you subscribe elsewhere, a couple of pounds for one film beats a new subscription, as our UK streaming availability guide sets out.
- Download before travelling. The same logic as Netflix, covered in our guide to downloading titles for offline viewing.
Common questions
Is Prime Video included with Amazon Prime?
Yes. If you pay for Prime, the video service is included, though not every title inside the app is.
Why does Prime Video ask me to pay for some films?
Because they belong to a Prime Video Channel or are rental-only. Look for the “included with Prime” label before pressing play.
Does Prime Video have adverts?
Yes, on originals and licensed content included with Prime. An ad-free option costs extra.
Does Prime Video still show Premier League football?
No. That package has ended. It does carry selected Champions League matches.
Can I subscribe to other services through Prime Video?
Yes, through Prime Video Channels, billed by Amazon and cancellable at any time.
The short version
A large included library that you are probably already paying for, wrapped in an interface designed to sell you more. Learn to spot the “included with Prime” label, check your channels once a year, and it becomes one of the better-value services in Britain. Whether it earns its place at all comes down to how often you order from Amazon, which we work through in our guide to whether Prime Video is worth it in the UK.
