Every list of the best films on Prime Video has the same flaw, and it is not a matter of taste. It is that most of them do not tell you which films you can actually watch.
Search the phrase and you will find guides running to a hundred titles. Follow one, find something that appeals, press play, and Prime Video asks you for money. The film was never included. It belonged to a channel you do not subscribe to, or it was rental-only, and the list did not say so.
So before any titles, the one habit that makes Prime Video usable.
Check for the label first
Three different things share one app, and only one of them is covered by your membership.
| What you are looking at | What happens when you press play |
|---|---|
| Included with Prime | It plays. This is your library |
| A Prime Video Channel | You are asked to subscribe to discovery+, Paramount+, MGM+, Apple TV or similar |
| Rent or buy | You are asked for a one-off payment |
All three appear side by side in search results with no visual separation worth speaking of. The fix is to look for the words included with Prime before you settle in, and to use the filter that shows only the included library when you are browsing rather than hunting for something specific.
Our full guide to Prime Video UK goes through how the three tiers work and why the app is built this way.
One other thing worth clearing up. You will see Prime Video films described as free. They are not free. They are included in a membership you pay for, usually alongside the delivery service, which is a different thing entirely. Our comparison of free versus paid streaming in the UK covers what genuinely free actually looks like in Britain.
Why we are not giving you a numbered list of a hundred films
Because it would be wrong within a month.
Outside its own productions, Prime Video’s film catalogue is licensed, and licences in Britain are short. A title can sit there for two years or eight weeks. The mechanics are the same across every service, and we set them out in our guide to why films and series move between UK services.
What does not change much is what Prime Video is reliably good at. That is more useful to know than a list of titles, because it tells you when to open the app and when not to bother.
Where Prime Video’s film catalogue is genuinely strong
Amazon’s own films
These are the only titles you can count on, because Amazon owns them. They do not expire and they do not move.
The recent run gives a fair sense of the range. The Runner, a London-set thriller with Gal Gadot as a lawyer with a very bad night ahead of her. In the Grey, a Guy Ritchie action picture with Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill and Rosamund Pike chasing a stolen fortune across several countries. The Love Hypothesis, adapted from Ali Hazelwood’s novel, with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman in a fake relationship that goes the way fake relationships go in these films. Road House, the remake that keeps the original’s cheerful stupidity intact, and Air, which turns Nike’s pursuit of Michael Jordan into a surprisingly tense story about a shoe.
The pattern is broad commercial film rather than anything difficult. If that is what you want on a Friday, this is a strong library.
Awards-season drama, once it has stopped being new
This is the part of Prime Video people underrate. A good deal of serious film arrives here a year or two after the cinema run, and it tends to stay a while.
Sing Sing, about a theatre programme inside a maximum-security prison, is the best of them. Nickel Boys tells its story almost entirely through its characters’ own eyes, which sounds like a gimmick and is not. Conclave turns a papal election into something closer to a political thriller. Sound of Metal follows a drummer losing his hearing and uses sound design to put you inside it. Manchester by the Sea is a portrait of grief that refuses to resolve, and is all the better for it.
If you only open Prime Video for something undemanding, this is the shelf you are walking past.
British film and factual
Prime Video has quietly become one of the better places for British material, largely because Amazon has been commissioning it.
Saltburn divided people and is worth seeing for that alone. 24 Hour Party People remains the best film anybody has made about the Manchester music scene. The Limey drops Terence Stamp into Los Angeles as an English ex-con looking for the truth about his daughter.
On the factual side, Clarkson’s Farm is the one that genuinely has no equivalent anywhere else, and it is included rather than an add-on. Series five ran in weekly batches over June, four episodes then two then two, which is how Amazon has been releasing its big titles. The Grand Tour continues with new presenters. Neither is a film, but both are the reason a great many British households open the app at all.
For more in this vein, our guide to where to watch British sitcoms covers the comedy side across every service.
Older films, properly
Prime Video’s back catalogue is deeper than Netflix UK’s and it is the part most subscribers never touch.
12 Angry Men is twelve men in one room for ninety minutes and more gripping than most thrillers made since. Dawn of the Dead is a film about shopping that happens to contain zombies. Drive is all neon and silence and sudden violence. Margin Call is the best film about the financial crisis because it is small, quiet and set over one night. The Wailing is Korean horror that takes its time and earns it.
If older film is what you are after, it is worth knowing that BFI Player runs as a Prime Video Channel, which is the tidiest route to classic and world cinema in Britain without another app and another password. We go through the options in our guide to where to watch classic films in the UK.
Rentals, which are the hidden strength
Prime Video’s rental catalogue is among the largest in Britain, and for one specific film it is almost always the cheaper answer than a new subscription you will forget to cancel.
This matters more than it sounds. If there is one title you want, renting it costs a fraction of a month elsewhere. Our UK streaming availability guide walks through how to check every option before you commit to anything.
Where it falls short
- The interface. Mixing included, channel and rental content in one view is the single most common complaint, and it is a commercial decision rather than a bug.
- Turnover. The licensed film catalogue changes noticeably month to month, so anything you have bookmarked may be gone.
- Depth in one genre. Like Netflix, Prime Video is wide rather than deep. Horror specialists, foreign-language enthusiasts and documentary obsessives all outgrow it.
- Advertising. Breaks now run on originals and licensed content included with a membership, with an ad-free option at extra cost.
Getting more out of the film catalogue
- Filter to what is included before you browse. Doing this once removes most of the frustration people blame on the recommendations.
- Use the watchlist, but check it. Titles leave without warning, and the watchlist does not always tell you clearly.
- Download before you travel. Same logic as everywhere else, and our guide to downloading for offline viewing applies.
- Audit your channels once a year. Open your Amazon account, find the channel subscriptions and look properly. People routinely find one they stopped watching months ago.
- Check your television before paying for 4K. Our guide to 4K streaming in the UK is honest about when it is worth it and when it is not.
A note on the October additions
American coverage reported both Blade Runner films arriving at the start of October ahead of the Blade Runner 2099 series, along with the full run of James Bond films.
We are not stating either as fact for Britain. Bond rights in the UK have moved between broadcasters repeatedly and American additions frequently do not cross over. Check the app before you plan an evening around it. This is the kind of gap our guide to how UK and US catalogues differ explains, and the same logic applies to Prime Video.
Common questions
Are films on Prime Video free?
No. They are included with a Prime membership you pay for. Some guides describe them as free, which is misleading. Titles outside the included library cost extra on top.
How do I tell if a film is included with my membership?
Look for the words “included with Prime” on the title page. If they are not there, you are being offered a channel subscription or a rental.
Why do films disappear from Prime Video?
Licences for anything Amazon did not produce run for a fixed term. When one ends, the title leaves unless it is renewed. Amazon’s own films stay.
Does Prime Video have better films than Netflix UK?
For older film and for rentals, yes. For volume of new originals, Netflix is ahead. Our comparison of UK streaming services works through it properly.
Can I watch Prime Video films without ads?
Advertising now runs on originals and included licensed content. An ad-free option is available at extra cost.
The short version
Prime Video’s film catalogue is broader than its reputation and much harder to navigate than it needs to be. Learn to spot the “included with Prime” label, filter to your own library before browsing, and look past the new releases to the awards-season drama and the older film, which is where it genuinely beats Netflix UK.
