Your show has been axed and you want to know two things: how many episodes it actually had, and whether they are about to vanish. Netflix has cancelled at least nine series in 2026 that we have fully verified, and together they had 128 episodes. The shortest run was seven episodes (The Abandons) and the longest was 50 (Sweet Magnolias). Cancellation does not remove episodes: a cancelled Netflix-made series stays on the service until a separate licensing decision says otherwise.

Netflix cancelled shows in 2026: the latest
The most recent decisions came close together in September 2026:
- 24 September: How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, Lisa McGee’s comedy thriller, will not return for a second series.
- 18 September: Sweet Magnolias ends after five seasons and 50 episodes. Netflix reportedly chose to order a new drama from its showrunner instead of a sixth season.
- 10 September: Ransom Canyon was cancelled after two seasons, less than two months after season two arrived.
Counts of “shows cancelled this year” vary between websites (roundups range from 10 to 17) because they use different rules. Some include planned endings and some include shows nobody has confirmed. We count only titles where Netflix or a named trade outlet has reported the decision, and we show our working below.

Two more titles are often listed as cancelled but are not confirmed in the same way. With Love, Meghan (16 episodes plus a holiday special) is reported by anonymous sources as not returning, but neither Netflix nor Meghan Markle has said so publicly. The Daily Beast reported the story from Page Six sources. The Indian series Class was renewed for a second season in 2023, but that season was never made, and Netflix has not formally confirmed the cancellation. We have kept both out of the table.
Cancelled after one season
Six of the nine ended after a single season, which is why one-season cancellations dominate search results.
- The Abandons: a western with Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey, released in full on 4 December 2025. Its finale ends on a cliffhanger, so the story stays unresolved.
- Terminator Zero: an anime released on 29 August 2024. Creator Mattson Tomlin says Netflix offered two or three extra episodes to wrap things up, and he turned them down.
- Bandi: a French-language crime drama set in Martinique, released on 9 April 2026. Netflix called the decision “a difficult decision that was not taken lightly”, and several storylines are left open.
- The Boroughs: a Duffer Brothers-produced series released on 21 May 2026. It spent four weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, yet was cancelled within weeks. Reports differ on whether the finale is a cliffhanger.
- How to Get to Heaven from Belfast: released on 12 February 2026. McGee left the door open for a second series.
- Building the Band: a music competition filmed in Manchester and released in July 2025, with Liam Payne as a judge before his death. Four groups from the show have since signed record deals.
Cancelled after two seasons
The Vince Staples Show ran for 11 episodes. Netflix had renewed it after fans campaigned for more, but season two drew only a modest audience. Ransom Canyon ran for 18 episodes, and Netflix cut season two from ten episodes to eight before cancelling it.
Cancelled after three or more seasons
Only one verified 2026 cancellation falls here: Sweet Magnolias, which ran for five seasons from May 2020. Its showrunner has said season five ended with open questions, as it was not written as a farewell.
Ending by design: shows that are not cancelled
A planned final season is not a cancellation, and mixing the two is the biggest source of errors on other lists. These shows are ending on Netflix’s terms:

Netflix shows that ended on an open ending
Only shows where a named report or the creator describes the ending are listed, and we avoid plot details. The Abandons ends on a cliffhanger, Bandi leaves several storylines open, and Sweet Magnolias closed season five with open questions. Terminator Zero is different: its creator says the season-one story is contained, even though he had planned several more seasons. Netflix offering wrap-up episodes, as it reportedly did here, is unusual.
Were any cancelled Netflix shows revived?
Sometimes, but it is rare, and fan campaigns alone do not count. A revival here means another platform has officially taken the show on. None of the 2026 cancellations above has a confirmed rescue as of 7 November 2026. Earlier examples, from What’s on Netflix’s list of rescued shows:

A concluding film such as Heartstopper Forever is also not a revival. It was planned by Netflix as the ending.

Quiet cancellations are common in regional slates. Netflix India has reportedly let renewed titles such as Class and Kaala Paani fade away without a public notice, so cast comments and trade reports are often the only confirmation.
How many episodes did cancelled Netflix series have?
Across the nine verified series there were 128 episodes. That works out at about 14 per series, but one show skews it: take out Sweet Magnolias and the average falls to roughly ten. The median is eight, which matches the standard size of a modern Netflix season.

Why does Netflix cancel shows?
Netflix has not published a universal cancellation formula. What we know comes from three places: Netflix’s own statements (rare), creators, and trade reporting on viewing figures.
Cost rises while novelty fades
Cast contracts include raises, production values grow, and budgets climb with each renewal. A series that was inexpensive in season one is markedly more expensive by season three, while the audience that came for the novelty has thinned out. A fresh first season of something else often costs less than a fourth season of an established show.
Completion matters more than starts
The number that matters most is not how many people started a season but how many finished it. Netflix cited completion rates alongside cost when it explained the Bandi decision. There is a fair criticism of this: it rewards series that hook people at once and punishes slow burners that need three or four episodes to land. Netflix’s counter-position is that each title is judged individually, and both things are probably true.
Netflix’s twice-yearly engagement report gives the public numbers. The report for July to December 2025, published on 20 January 2026, covered 96 billion hours viewed and defines a view as hours viewed divided by runtime. It does not state a renewal threshold. Does Netflix cancel shows after two seasons?
No verified policy says so. Our own 2026 set shows no fixed pattern: six series ended after one season, two after two seasons, and one after five. Netflix has not published a two-season rule, and each show faces its own mix of cost, viewing and timing.
Are cancelled Netflix shows still available to watch?
Usually yes. Cancellation is a forward-looking decision about future seasons. Removal is a separate licensing matter, driven by licence expiry, whether rights are obtainable, regional popularity and renewal cost. Plenty of cancelled shows stay available for years. The quick test: did this show air on another network, or in another country, before reaching Netflix? If yes, there is a licence underneath and a clock you cannot see. All nine series in our table were commissioned by Netflix, so none has a known licence clock. Catalogues still differ by country, which is why Netflix UK and Netflix US libraries do not match, and streaming rights in the UK explain why. Check the title page in your own country rather than relying on a list.
One wrinkle breaks the neat rule. Where Netflix revived a show that belonged to someone else, the seasons it funded can stay entangled with the original rights holder. Arrested Development is the reported example, and it applies to revivals, not original commissions.
What to do when your show is axed
- Finish the season. Completion is the metric that counts, and campaigns carry more weight when viewing figures support them.
- Check whether the story continues elsewhere. Adaptations often have source novels that go further, and co-productions sometimes carry on with another broadcaster at home.

- Download it if it is licensed. If the show aired elsewhere first, the licence clock is real, so downloading episodes to watch offline buys you time if a removal date appears.

- Search Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, which usually break the news first.
- Look for a statement from the creators or production company.
- Check whether a final season or film has already been announced.
- Treat social media rumours and fan databases as leads, not proof.
