In the UK, most British sitcoms are free to watch if you know where to look. BBC sitcoms such as Gavin & Stacey, The Office and Ghosts are on BBC iPlayer. Channel 4 sitcoms such as Peep Show and Father Ted are free on Channel 4’s streaming service. The exceptions are older classics like Fawlty Towers and Dad’s Army, which sit behind a paid plan on Sky Go and NOW.
This guide shows where each popular sitcom lives, what it costs and what to check before you pay. We checked 18 well-known titles against UK listings on 7 November 2026.
Quick answer
13 of the 18 sitcoms we checked have a free route in the UK, through BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 or both. The other five need a paid plan or a purchase: Absolutely Fabulous, Blackadder, Dad’s Army, Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses.
Where to watch British sitcoms in the UK at a glance
| Service | What it costs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | No extra fee, but you need a TV Licence | Gavin & Stacey, The Office, Ghosts, Miranda, Detectorists |
| Channel 4 | Free with adverts (free account) | Peep Show, The Inbetweeners, Father Ted, Derry Girls |
| ITVX Premium | £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year | Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, Absolutely Fabulous |
| Sky Go and NOW | Sky plan or NOW membership | Fawlty Towers, Dad’s Army, Yes Minister |
| Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video | Monthly subscription | A few titles, such as Peep Show and Derry Girls (Netflix), The IT Crowd (Disney+) and Fleabag (Prime Video) |
| Apple TV and Amazon Video | Pay once per series | Most of what is left |
The rule: follow the broadcaster
A sitcom almost always streams on the service belonging to whoever originally made it. Once you know the broadcaster, you know where to look first.
| Originally made by | Where it usually streams |
|---|---|
| BBC | BBC iPlayer, though some older titles are on Sky Go, NOW or ITVX Premium instead |
| ITV | ITVX, with the older archive in ITVX Premium |
| Channel 4, E4 or More4 | Channel 4’s streaming service |
| Channel 5 | My5 |
| Dave, Gold and the UKTV channels | U (formerly UKTV Play), now also inside Channel 4’s app |
| Older archive comedy from any of the above | ITVX Premium (which includes the old BritBox library) or Sky Go and NOW |
That single table answers most searches faster than typing a title into four apps in turn. The main exception is older BBC comedy. Dad’s Army and Fawlty Towers were made by the BBC, but neither is listed on iPlayer at the time of writing. They sit on Sky Go and NOW instead.
What 18 British sitcoms tell us
BBC iPlayer is the biggest free source. Seven of the 18 titles are free on iPlayer and nowhere else for free. Channel 4 covers five more, and Red Dwarf is free on both.
Sky Go and NOW carry the most titles overall, 14 of 18, but they are paid services. Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video hold only two or three each. A title can sit on more than one service, so the bars below add up to more than 18.
Where to watch popular British sitcoms in the UK
Use this table to find a specific show. “Free” means no subscription fee, though iPlayer needs a TV Licence and Channel 4 shows adverts. A dash means no route was listed.
| Sitcom (made for) | Free | Paid subscription | Buy digitally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absolutely Fabulous (BBC) | — | Sky Go, NOW, ITVX Premium | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Blackadder (BBC) | — | Sky Go, NOW, ITVX Premium | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Dad’s Army (BBC) | — | Sky Go, NOW | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Derry Girls (Channel 4) | Channel 4 | Netflix, Sky Go | — |
| Detectorists (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | Disney+ | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Fawlty Towers (BBC) | — | Sky Go, NOW | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Father Ted (Channel 4) | Channel 4 | Sky Go | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Fleabag (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | Prime Video | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Gavin & Stacey (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | Sky Go, NOW | Apple TV, Amazon Video, Sky Store |
| Ghosts (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | — | — |
| The Inbetweeners (E4) | Channel 4 | — | — |
| The IT Crowd (Channel 4) | Channel 4 | Disney+, Prime Video, Sky Go | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Miranda (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | Sky Go | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| The Office (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | Sky Go, NOW | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
| Only Fools and Horses (BBC) | — | Sky Go, NOW, ITVX Premium | Amazon Video |
| Peep Show (Channel 4) | Channel 4 | Netflix, Disney+, Sky Go | — |
| Red Dwarf (BBC) | BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, U | Netflix, Sky Go, NOW | Amazon Video, Sky Store |
| Yes Minister (BBC) | BBC iPlayer | Sky Go | Apple TV, Amazon Video |
Father Ted is set in Ireland and Derry Girls in Northern Ireland. Both were made for Channel 4, which is why UK viewers find them alongside British comedy.
The services, and what each is actually for
BBC iPlayer
The biggest free home for BBC comedy, both current shows and a rotating selection of archive material. You need a TV Licence to watch or download anything on iPlayer, live or catch-up. The licence costs £180 a year from April 2026, and our TV Licence and streaming guide explains who needs one. Archive holdings change more than people expect, so a title missing today may return.
ITVX and ITVX Premium
ITVX is free with adverts, which is how most people use it. ITVX Premium removes most of the adverts and includes the old BritBox UK library. That library is why Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder and Absolutely Fabulous show up there. BritBox UK closed in 2024, so there is no separate UK BritBox subscription any more.
Channel 4
Channel 4’s streaming service (formerly All 4) is free with adverts and a free account. It holds a very large library, and its comedy output has been among the most distinctive in Britain. Peep Show, The Inbetweeners, Father Ted, The IT Crowd and Derry Girls are all listed free there.
My5
Channel 5 content, free with an account. Smaller than the others, but the one people forget entirely.
U (formerly UKTV Play)
UKTV renamed UKTV Play to U in July 2024. It covers Dave, Drama, W and Yesterday, with a deep well of comedy and panel-show box sets. Since January 2026, much of its content also appears inside Channel 4’s app, but U remains a separate service. It is still the most overlooked service in Britain, so check it before assuming something is unavailable.
Sky Go and NOW
Together they cover 14 of the 18 titles, mostly the classics. Sky Go is for Sky customers, and NOW is Sky’s pay-as-you-go service. If you already pay for one, our guide to NOW and Sky in the UK shows what else the plan includes, so check there before paying anywhere else.
Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video
These hold only a handful of British sitcoms, and the lineup changes. Disney+ has picked up The IT Crowd, Detectorists and Peep Show, which is useful if you already pay for Disney+ in the UK. Netflix titles rotate too, so it helps to check whether a title is leaving Netflix UK before a long rewatch.
Free and legal ways to watch
| Service | What you pay | What you need | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | No extra fee | TV Licence and a free BBC account | UK only; some classics are missing |
| ITVX | £0 | Free account | Adverts; UK only |
| Channel 4 | £0 | Free account | Adverts; UK and Republic of Ireland only |
| My5 | £0 | Free account | Smaller library |
| U | £0 | Free account | Adverts |
You need a TV Licence to watch live TV on any channel or service, and to use BBC iPlayer. On-demand programmes on ITVX, Channel 4 and My5 do not need one, but their live streams do. Our guide to free streaming services in the UK covers more free options.
The overlap worth checking before you pay

Three sitcoms, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder and Absolutely Fabulous, are on both Sky Go or NOW and ITVX Premium. If you already pay for one, you do not need the other for those three.
ITVX Premium already includes the BritBox library, so you should never pay for both in the UK. Also check that you are not paying for ITVX Premium twice, once directly and once through Prime Video Channels. Compare the price and what is included before you keep both.
Bundles are another overlap. Some broadband, mobile and Sky deals include streaming, so look at streaming bundles in the UK before you add anything. If you are already paying for something you no longer use, you can cancel a streaming subscription in the UK in a few minutes. For a single paid service, our comparison of UK streaming services helps you choose.
Buying and renting British sitcoms
Apple TV and Amazon Video list a digital purchase for 14 of the 18 titles. A digital purchase is a licence held in that store’s library, not a disc you own. The trackers listed no rentals for these series, so you buy them rather than rent.
For a series you return to every Christmas, owning it can work out cheaper than a subscription taken only for that purpose. A DVD or Blu-ray box set also keeps working when a licence ends. UK DVDs are Region 2 and Blu-rays are Region B, so check your player before you buy from abroad. Check that the edition includes the Christmas specials.
Illustrative example: say you only want Only Fools and Horses and Blackadder over Christmas. One month of ITVX Premium costs £5.99, while a year costs £59.99. Subscribe in December and cancel before the next payment date, and you pay about a tenth of the yearly price. Check current prices first.
Why a sitcom you remember isn’t anywhere

Rights are sold country by country and window by window. Our guide to how streaming rights work in the UK explains why. Three usual explanations:
- Catch-up services are not archives. iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 are built around recent programming, with older material rotating in and out.
- Rights for older shows are complicated. Music clearance in particular can keep a series off streaming entirely. A comedy that used chart music at the time may be effectively unstreamable without expensive re-clearance.
- It may have moved. Archive rights are licensed and re-licensed like anything else, so a show can shift between ITVX Premium, Sky, a broadcaster’s own service and Netflix over the years.
How to check where a sitcom is streaming
- Check the free services first. Between iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5 and U, an enormous share of British comedy is available at no additional cost.
- Search across everything at once rather than app by app. Our UK streaming availability guide explains how.
- Check what your existing subscriptions include. Sky, NOW and ITVX Premium overlap on several classics.
- Check the series and specials. A service can carry a show without every series or Christmas special.
Watching British sitcoms outside the UK
| Player | Where it works | Outside that area |
|---|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | UK, with a TV Licence | Streaming is restricted to the UK because of rights agreements |
| ITVX | UK | No live or on-demand streaming; Premium downloads made in the UK can be watched offline abroad for up to seven days |
| Channel 4 | UK and Republic of Ireland | Not available to stream; downloads can be watched overseas |
Abroad, different services hold the rights, and catalogues differ country by country. In the US, for example, BritBox and Prime Video carry some British comedy. In India, check the Netflix India and Prime Video India listings directly. Do not assume a UK or US catalogue applies where you are.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I watch British sitcoms in the UK?
Start with the free services: BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5 and U. Paid options include Sky Go, NOW, ITVX Premium, Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video. You can also buy series from Apple TV and Amazon Video. Follow the original broadcaster to find a show fastest.
What is the best streaming service for British sitcoms?
There is no single best one. BBC iPlayer is the best free option for BBC sitcoms, and Channel 4 for its own. Among the 18 titles we checked, Sky Go and NOW carry the most (14), but they need a paid plan.
Can I watch British sitcoms for free?
Yes. BBC iPlayer (with a TV Licence), ITVX, Channel 4, My5 and U all carry British comedy at no additional cost, with adverts on the commercial services. Of the 18 sitcoms we checked, 13 had a free route in the UK on 7 November 2026.
Is BritBox available in the UK?
Not as a separate service. BritBox UK closed in 2024 and its library moved into ITVX Premium, which costs £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year at the time of writing. If you have ITVX Premium, you already have the BritBox library.
Are British sitcoms on Netflix UK?
A few are. Peep Show, Derry Girls and Red Dwarf were listed on Netflix in the UK on 7 November 2026. Netflix titles come and go often, so check the app before you subscribe for one show.
Can I watch British sitcoms on Prime Video in the UK?
Some. Fleabag and The IT Crowd were listed as included with Prime Video, and many other sitcoms can be bought from Amazon Video. Prime Video Channels are add-on subscriptions that cost extra, so check the price first.
Do I need a TV Licence to watch BBC iPlayer?
Yes. In the UK you need a TV Licence to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer, live or catch-up. It costs £180 a year from April 2026. You do not need one for on-demand programmes on ITVX, Channel 4 or My5.
Is BBC iPlayer available outside the UK?
No. The BBC says iPlayer programmes cannot be streamed outside the UK because of rights agreements. ITVX is also UK only, and Channel 4 streams in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Downloads made in advance may be watchable abroad under each service’s rules.
Where can I watch Only Fools and Horses in the UK?
On 7 November 2026 it was listed on Sky Go, NOW and ITVX Premium, and you can buy it from Amazon Video. No free route was listed, so it is not on iPlayer or ITVX’s free tier at the time of writing.
Where can I watch Fawlty Towers in the UK?
Sky Go and NOW include it, and you can buy it from Apple TV and Amazon Video. No free route was listed. With only 12 episodes, a digital copy is a sensible buy if you rewatch it often.
Where can I watch The Office UK?
It is free on BBC iPlayer with a TV Licence, and also on Sky Go and NOW. You can buy it from Apple TV and Amazon Video. Pick the UK version with Ricky Gervais, as the US remake is on different services.
Why isn’t a well-known sitcom streaming at all?
Often it is music rights. Series that used popular music at the time can be too expensive to re-clear for streaming. Licences also expire and titles move between services, so a show missing today may return later.
In short
Follow the original broadcaster and you will find most things first time. Check the free services before paying for anything, then look at Sky Go, NOW and ITVX Premium for older classics. Last checked: 7 November 2026. Catalogues change often, so confirm in the app before you subscribe.
